The Origin of the Persian Cat

Some people say that Persian cats originated from Ancient Persia which is Iran today, some say Russia but really the actual origin is unknown. The Persian cat breed became official in the year 1887 in Great Britain. One known fact is that the Persian Cat breed is the oldest breed around.

Persian cats were a rare breed then and highly admired by royalty. This cat breed arrived in America in the 1980's and became very popular. To this day, there are about 150 variations of Persians which is a result of all the cat breeders. Today's Persian cats have changed a bit from the Persians in the older days. They are now considered one of the most popular breeds today.

  4. That interesting history befits an exotic cat like the Persian. I was a little surprised by how young the breed is. It just seems like it would have taken longer than 125 years to develop such a unique breed.
